Britain's capital is a treasure trove of sights for the visitor.
It offers everything you would expect from a major international
metropolis: First class accommodation, excellent international cuisine,
shopping for all wallet sizes, an abundance of historical attractions
and 'photo opportunities', a museum for every age group and interest,
busker-filled squares, souvenir stands on many corners, as well
as world class theater and entertainment.
Neon-clad Piccadilly circus is a tourist magnet and a good bases
for exploring the central sights of Leicester square, Soho and the
West End (restaurants and theatre), Buckingham palace and St James
Park, Trafalgar square, Big Ben, the superbly gothic Parliament
Buildings and incomparable Westminster Abbey. By popular tourist
'hop-on hop-off' bus you can get to St Paul's Cathedral, the Tower
of London, majestic Tower Bridge and other remoter sites. Alternatively
you may prefer a stroll along the Thames banks, admiring the world's
largest Ferris wheel - the London Eye.
If you'd rather just shop, Oxford street attracts the tourists,
with its myriad of fashion shops, department stores and music and
book emporiums. More trendy clothes can be found on the Kings road,
or the bohemian Camden market and high street. Those will more money
to spend will find exclusive shopping along New Bond Street and
around Mayfair, while the world famous Harrods is located in Knightsbridge
along with Harvey Nichols. Electronics are found aplenty along Tottenham
court road, while Carnaby Street- a sixties icon in the heart of
Soho - is now full of souvenir shops.
The city caters well for visitors with an excellent tourist infrastructure
and facilities. Although London is large in size, a combination
of public transport and walking is the best way to see the numerous
sites. For students, make sure to take an international student
card or for families seek out family discounts, as the numerous
museums can quickly add up in cost. Good underground, rail and bus
connections exist and the one day travel card is very handy for
tourists.
Entertainment and dining is spread across the city, depending on
your taste. The most popular entertainment and dining district is
the West End, with all the top shows and theatres located in this
area. Covent Garden is another popular area. areas. For luxury dining
seek out some of the world class restaurants in Mayfair.
Being a major metropolis, London has numerous travel options, including
four international airports, at least six inter-city rail stations,
numerous underground stops and the ubiquitous read double-decker
London buses.
