What to see by foot: Moscow

The vast expanse of Red Square and the imposing walls and buildings of the
Kremlin are a wonderful place to explore on foot. From inside these red walls,
Napoleon watched Moscow burn; Stalin and Ivan the Terrible unleashed Reigns
of Terror; and Yeltsin oversaw the new Russia.
Begin your tour on Red Square, which is bordered by the huge GUM department
store on one side and the Kremlin on the other. At one end of the square stands
the beautiful St Basil's Cathedral. Its onion-shaped domes and gaudy colours
evoke exotic images and are redolent of fairy tales. Its fascinating exterior
is matched by its interior, which features narrow walkways, twisting tunnels
and cramped chapels.
Also on the square is Lenin's mausoleum, where the mummified remains of the
bearded revolutionary are preserved. However, its opening hours are erratic
and its status is constantly being reviewed.
Inside the Kremlin itself is a wealth of political and architectural treasures.
Among the fortress' highlights is Ivan the Great's Bell Tower with the huge
cracked Tsar Bell at its base. The tower is a famous Moscow landmark, visible
from 30kms away. The other towers lining the Kremlin include: the Tower of Secrets
(the oldest); the Gothic and the Renaissance Saviour's Tower.
There are numerous other attractions worth visiting, including: churches, the
Politburo building, and the residences of Stalin and Yeltsin. There is also
a magnificent museum which houses many priceless artefacts from the days of
the Tsars, including gold-plated sleighs and carriages, as well as Peter the
Great's throne.
