What to see by car: Moscow

There are many sights in the outskirts and outside Moscow which can be reached
by car. The town of Sergiev Posad is one of Russia's most ancient towns and
is surrounded by beautiful countryside. The provincial town has a famous monastery
called St Sergey Lavra, founded in the 14th century. The monastery has collected
beautiful icons, jewellery pieces and works of art which now attract thousands
of tourists.
Another place of interest is the Gagarin Training Centre in the town of Zvezdny.
This training centre for Russian cosmonauts houses a museum and a memorial to
Yuriy Gagarin, the world's first spaceman. The complex is also home to simulators,
hydro-labs, and a huge model of the space station submerged in a swimming pool.
There is also a unique cosmic planetarium which features the projection of 9,000
stars upon the dome ceiling; it also simulates space travel and shows how cosmonauts
undergo their training.
The splendid Kuskovo Museum Estate is known as the Moscow Versailles. Beautiful
paintings by European masters serve as decorations for the palace's interior.
Highlights include the Museum of Porcelain, which boasts unique specimens of
porcelain and antique ceramics. The complex also contains a landscaped lake,
a tree-lined avenue, a grotto and the tent-roofed church of the Dormitio of
Our Lady, as well as classical Italian and Dutch houses.
On the city's outskirts is the vast Gorky Park which offers a respite from
Moscow's urban landscape, and houses a giant ice-rink in the winter.
