What to see by car: St Petersburg
St Petersburg's suburbs provide perfect daytrip opportunities. Within a one- or
two-hour car trip from St Petersburg lie several parks with beautiful palaces
which were the resting places of several Tsars.
The Cottage Palace in Peterhof/Petrodvorets is 30kms west of St Petersburg on
the Gulf of Finland. This was the cottage where Peter the Great was quartered
while building an entire series of palaces on an estate called Petrodvorets or
Peter's Palace.
Pavlovsk was built for Russian Tsar Paul I, the only son of Catherine the Great.
Here you can wander through the wonderful park or stroll along the Tremble Lime
Alley. There are also the romantic Old Woods, where a bronze statue of Apollo,
and 12 muses majestically stand. Additionally, visit the former royal residence,
the Great Palace.
The town of Pushkin served as the summer resort for the Tzars of Russia from
the time of Peter the Great to the last years of the Romanov dynasty. The town
is composed of three main grounds, with over 100 buildings, and is an ensemble
of palaces and parks. Here you can explore the wild and overgrown Alexander
Park and taste the waters of a popular natural spring behind the old Arsenal
building. Alternatively, stroll through the more kempt Catherine Park and rent
your own boat to traverse the Great Pond.
Head to Lomonosov to visit Catherine the Great's former holiday grounds at
Oranieumbaum. The extravagance of the Chinese Palace is breathtaking. Alternatively,
the many kilometres of narrow and quiet mystical pine forests provide for a
relaxing stroll.
Located 45 kilometres southwest of St Petersburg, Gatchina was built by Count
Grigory Orlov, one of Catherine the Great's lovers. After his death it became
an imperial residence and the favourite of Paul I, who lived most of his life
here. An early classical style residence, it boasts a wonderful park complete
with lakes and an island.
Vyborg is one of the oldest cities in Europe. Here you can visit the famous
Vyborg Castle, built on a rock in the bay, and stroll about the historic parks
and pavilions of the grandiose Monrepo Estate.
