Hotels in Alcudia - Majorca
What to see by foot: Alcudia - Majorca
The old town of Alcudia is about a mile inland from a bustling fishing port
and vast expanse of beautiful beach on the island of Majorca. It is an archaeological
delight with evidence of Roman, Moor and Byzantine habitation. The Archaeological
Museum founded in 1948 houses an extensive collection from the excavations carried
out by students and scholars from all over the world.
Parts of the town date back to the 14th century and the easiest way to see
the other side of Alcudia is to take a guided walking tour of the old town.
The local tourist office organises the 2-hour walk every Wednesday at noon.
The old town was once the Roman capital of Majorca; however, there are now few
visible remains since most of the building materials have been recycled to create
the present town.
This quaint town comes to life Sunday and Tuesday which are market days; you
can wander around the colourful stalls, searching for souvenirs, or sample some
authentic Spanish cuisine at one of the many fine restaurants and cafés.
The beach area is fantastic and a lot quieter and more scenic than some of
its noisy neighbours. The soft, white sand extends for 8 kilometres, shelves
gently into the sea and is perfect for swimming and water sports.
Visit San Martin where many of the small caves are in fact chapels to various
saints. Or, if you're feeling energetic, climb up Sa Talaia d'Alcudia; at over
400m, it affords a spectacular view over the whole area.
Nearby, the natural wetlands of l'Albufera are a nature sanctuary with many
rare birds, fish, amphibians and plants. The area is a delightful place to relax
and listen to the sounds of nature.
