What to see by car: Alcudia - Majorca

There is much to see on a typical drive around the fascinating island of Majorca, from stunning beaches and lush mountainous areas to historic towns and quaint villages. A short drive south of Alcudia is the elegant capital Palma - summering-place of Spanish royalty. It possesses one of Spain's loveliest harbour views, dominated by the great cathedral complete with flying buttresses. Close beside it stands Palau de l'Almudaina, for many centuries a royal palace and seat of government.

Also on the seafront is the Gothic Llotja, or Exchange; its gracefully soaring interior is today used for exhibitions. Behind, the city flows gently uphill through a long series of Ramblas, or avenues - country cousins to the Ramblas of Barcelona. The tangled old town to the east of the Ramblas is a feast of ancient patios.
To the west of Alcudia is the charming mountain village of Soller, with its old architecture, beautiful gardens and pleasant plazas. The main square in town, the Plaça de la Constitucio, is the place to go for some excellent eateries and watering holes. The train journey from Palma to Soller through the Tramuntana mountains and lovely olive groves is particularly special, offering some fantastic views along the way.
It can be difficult to find seclusion on a Majorcan beach; but the stretch of coastline between Cala Bona and Cala Millor on the east coast of the island has an offering of small sandy bays, ideal for peaceful sunbathing, which are nestled between rocky outcrops.

Cala Bona is not a purpose-built resort and therefore retains the original feel of a small fishing town; however, it is one of the best beach and leisure areas on the island. Take a gentle stroll in the quaint old fishing town with its original, narrow streets, down to the small working harbour around which you will find a wide variety of open air cafés and bars.
