Geography of Alicante
    
Alicante is located at the heart of the Costa Blanca, nestled between the mountains
and the sea, and surrounded by pine-topped hills and lush fertile valleys. Primarily
a seaport throughout history and still today, a constant sense of the sea pervades
the city.
One of Alicante's strong points is the easy accessibility it provides to the
stunning Costa Blanca coastline. Translated as 'white coast', the area takes
its name from its endless miles of white sand beaches. The region's mild climate
makes beach life feasible practically all year round; and there are numerous
beaches to suit any visitor's needs.
Within the city, the most popular and well known beach is La Playa de San Juan,
just 10 minutes from Alicante's centre. El Postiguet is an urban beach popular
with young locals and located nearby at the foot of Benacantil Mountain. Alternatively,
surrounded by high headlands, La Albufereta is a more relaxed and intimate beach,
offering an escape from crowds.
Outside of the city the sands continue, with international resorts and small
traditional Spanish villages sitting side by side, up and down the coast. At
the Cabo de las Huertas you'll find rugged, rocky areas and golden sands with
coves such as los Cantarales, los Judios and Palmera.
In stark contrast the north of Costa Blanca is relatively mountainous. Montgo
Mountain is regarded as the jewel in the crown of the Costa Blanca and is a
cool oasis from the region's summer heat. The lower plains are fertile and green,
interspersed with colourful groves of orange and olive trees, and orchards of
almonds. Farther south the region is flatter and more humid. Here you will find
the biggest palm garden in the whole of Europe, as well as some interesting
salt flats.
From its spectacular stretches of sand and hopping beach bars along the coast,
to small cool mountainous villages in the north and flat fertile plains in the
south, the region of Costa Blanca has something for everyone.
