What to see by foot: Alicante

From historic fortresses to palatial homes, a bustling seafront promenade to
relaxing parks, there is much to see and do in Alicante. Walking around the
city during the day is a pleasant way to discover the town. Alicante faces the
sea and its seafront promenade, Paseo de la Explanada, is renowned as one of
the most beautiful in Spain.
The quayside promenade is a pleasant stroll and is lined by Parisian-style street
cafés, rows of palms and intricate marble inlays of red, cream and black
tiles. At the far end of the Explanada there is a music pavilion where the Municipal
Band gives concerts on feast days.
Alicante is a very green city and has many parks. Notable are Canalejas, with
an important display of giant fuchus, el Palmeral, located on the seafront along
the Murcia road; and el Benacantil, with its extensive pine groves. Alicante's
18th century palatial homes are dotted around the city; Calle de Labradores
in particular features great displays of the old wealth and nobility in this
town.
Alicante's prime attraction is its huge medieval fortress, Castillo de Santa
Barbara, dominating the town from its pine-covered hills to the north. It is
easily accessible by cable car from Jovellanas Avenue. Other historic attractions
include St Mary's, a gothic 14th century church built over the ruins of a Moorish
mosque. The ruins of St Ferdinand Castle and the Concathedral of Saint Nicholas
of Bari are also interesting reminders of the city's past.
The city offers an interesting range of cultural activities such as the Casa
de la Cultura (cultural centre), which has a well-stocked library and a historical
archive, and keeps locals and visitors abreast of cultural movements by staging
expositions, conferences and films. In September the National Theatre Meeting
'Alicante a Escena' is held, along with the International Contemporary Music
Festival. In December there is an International Puppet Festival.
For many visitors, shopping is an important part of their stay. There is plenty
to browse including authentic local handicrafts: ceramics from Agost; bags and
baskets from Gata de Gorgos; and rugs from Crevillente. The city centre offers
an excellent range of top quality shops including the famous El Corte Ingles
department store. The latest designer clothes and footwear are hot items in
Alicante; shops also boast an impressive range of embroidery, fashion jewellery
and leather goods. More generalized goods are available at several department
stores in the city centre.
