What to see by car: Alicante

Exploring the wider region is particularly rewarding and the visitor can choose
to spend a day out on the coast, explore beautiful valleys or venture high into
the mountainous north. Also within convenient reach of Alicante are many quaint
villages worth exploring; try to visit each on their separate market days. Particularly
popular attractions in the area include the village of Jijona, which is the
birthplace of Turr, and the Caves of Canelobre, a true marvel of nature with
their magnificent stalactites and stalagmites
For beaches, nearby Moraira is a quiet sheltered bay with good swimming and
sunbathing as well as lively beachside entertainment. El Portet Beach around
the bay is also a popular visit. Travelling along the coast, the towns of Calpe
and Altea are worth a stop. Calpe is famous for its wide variety of seafood
restaurants; and Altea is known for its day market which stretches along the
seafront.
Heading inland the visitor can enjoy the largest palm forest in Europe at Elche,
a uniquely subtropical area, just south of Alicante. The Jalon Valley is also
unique for its beautiful almond, orange and lemon groves and its stunning nearby
Cascada de El Algar waterfalls. Wineries abound in the valleys and there are
many bodegas where you can taste wine and stock up your own cellars at reasonable
prices.
Heading to the mountains on the road to Castella, the more adventurous can visit
Maigmó Mountain (1296 m). The ascent is pleasant and offers panoramic
views of the Castella Mountains and the Alicante plain, with the blue Mediterranean
in the background. Guadalest, a small walled village high in the ranges offers
similarly breathtaking vistas.
The only inhabited island in Valencia, Tabarca, is located off the Cabo de Santa
Pola near Alicante city. Once a refuge for pirates, the island is more renowned
today for its clear waters and was recently declared an official Mediterranean
marine nature reserve. There is a diverse range of marine life, snorkelling
is particularly popular. The island's small fishing village offers visitors
the opportunity to enjoy splendid seafood cuisine; and transport is regularly
offered from the mainland to the port.
