Travelling to Barcelona

For the motorist, the highways are well developed, safe and easy to negotiate.
Major routes enter the city from the north and south; and there is also a busy
inland route from Madrid. The coastal roads afford the traveller excellent views;
and the countryside scenery is similarly rewarding.
From France, you have a choice of driving on the express highway (E-15) or
the more scenic coastal road. You can also enter Barcelona via Toulouse. Cross
the border into Spain at Puigcerdà near the principality of Andorra,
and then take the N-152 to Barcelona. From Madrid, take the N-2 to Zaragoza,
then the A-2 to El Vendrell, followed by the A-7 motorway to Barcelona. From
the Costa Blanca or Costa del Sol, follow the E-15 north from Valencia along
the eastern Mediterranean coast.
Travelling by rail is also convenient. Domestic rail services in Spain are
renowned for their reliability, efficiency and value for money. Rail is also
a popular choice as the southern route heading towards the Costa del Sol, Seville
and Andalusian destinations clings to the coastline, offering breathtaking views.
Services are regular from Barcelona to most major Spanish cities, with several
trains running daily to Madrid and Nice. Barcelona's principal train station
for those arriving from outside of Spain is Estacio Sants, located just west
of La Rambla. For domestic travellers, many trains also arrive at Catalunya
Station on Play de Catalunya, due north, while Estacio Franc Station east of
La Rambla is less frequented.
Bus, despite affordable prices and the well-established European and domestic
network, is the least popular means of transport for the majority of visitors,
as distances are long and journeys are arduous. The main intercity bus station
is located northeast of La Rambla at Estacia del Nord.
For those arriving by air, Barcelona International Airport is the most convenient
choice. Located just 14kms southwest of the city centre, the airport is serviced
by frequent flights from all major European cities as well as from several international
destinations including cities in North America and Asia (stopover flights).
Domestic connections are frequent and include flights to and from the Balearic
Islands.
