Geography of Barcelona

Located on Spain's north-eastern coast on the shores of the Mediterranean, the city of Barcelona is enclosed by the Collserola ridge and bounded by the Besós and Llobregat rivers. The city is set against a backdrop of dramatic mountains and offers access to some of the most scenic and diverse landscapes Spain has to offer.

Barcelona's location on the coast ensures a warm and welcoming climate year round. There are many fine beaches within the city itself, only minutes from the central old quarter. Between the Barceloneta district and the River Besos, the visitor has access to over 4kms of long sandy beachfront frequented by locals through all seasons.

The Costa Brava, the Catalan coast to the north of the city, similarly offers many golden sand beaches as well as an endless succession of coves and cliffs. It is not uncommon in the north for the beach shores to be surrounded by thriving forests of pine, an exception for this part of the coast.
The city is also less than 150kms from the Pyrenees, the natural frontier with France. Here the Andorra mountain range offers numerous ski resorts and is ideal for those wanting to climb, hike or participate in a wide range of other adventure sports. Inland, the landscape changes again and bears fruitful wine-producing plains and the peculiar rocky mountain range of Montserrat.
