What to see by foot: Barcelona

Few cities in Europe are as rich in historical and cultural attractions as
Barcelona. There is a plethora of interesting sites and charming areas of the
city that can be explored on foot. Particularly popular, of course, are the
bizarre and colourful sites of the famous artists Picasso and Gaudi. Picasso's
museum is a major attraction as is Gaudi's eccentric and flamboyant la Pedrera
apartment block and the jaw-dropping Sagrada Familia Cathedral. The bizarre,
colourful and convention-defying architecture of Antonio Gaudi attracts hordes
of tourists and although the Cathedral remains unfinished, it impresses none-the-less,
typified by soaring, odd shaped spires and deeply symbolic flair - unseen in
any other artist's work.
The year 2004 also celebrates 100 years of Salvador Dalí, one of the
most revered 20th century artists and a genius of surrealism. An ever-changing
exposition of his many works will be held at Caixaforum throughout the year.
Barcelona is divided into several distinct districts, each with something different
to offer the visitor. The modern district starting at Port Vell and the Olympic
Port is popular for its wide choice of entertainment as well as its dominating
statue of Christopher Columbus. From here you can discover Las Ramblas, renowned
as the most animated artery of the city. Stroll down the tree-lined pedestrian
thoroughfare and admire the many street artists and 'alive' statues, as well
the street-side cafés and shops.
At Las Ramblas' far end is Placa de Catalunya: the heart of Barcelona. Here
is where some of the most prestigious and modern shops in Barcelona preside.
Barri Gotic is the old quarter of the city, where the visitor can discover Barcelona's
long history. The area is crowded with notable Roman remains and various medieval
structures; the Cathedral de la Santa Creu is particularly interesting.
The old town's winding streets are also lined with many cheap pensions and
restaurants serving local specialties such as tapas and paella. The district
of Montjuic affords spectacular views of Barcelona from all sides and is site
of the main facilites that served the 1992 Olympic games. This old district
is home to the luminous Gaieta Buigas fountain as well as a selection of fine
art galleries, leisure attractions and parks. The Museum Nacional d'Art de Catalunya
is also located here.
