What to see by car: Barcelona

Exploring beyond Barcelona's city confines is particularly rewarding. As well as affording spectacular mountains and a stunning coastline, the surrounding suburbs boast many interesting things to see and do. Located just behind the city is Parc Guell, where Gaudi spent the last 20 years of his life in Spain. His well- preserved home now houses an interesting museum.

The area's original market site, Sala Hipstila, is a fascinating forest of stone columns. However, it is the park itself which is most impressive, with its brilliantly imaginative and bizarre ceramic benches, giant lizards, decorative mosaics and contorted stone pavilions.

Tibidabo is the wooded range that forms the backdrop to Barcelona and offers spectacular views as well as a popular amusement park which draws visitors and locals alike. The breathtaking Basilica del Sagrat Coris is also here. The range's highest peak stands at 115m and can be reached by a glass lift.

To the west of the city, the province of Lleida is the fruit-producing capital of Catalonia and is similarly famous for its local olive oils and Romanesque Church trail. The area's primary wine producing region is located at the heart of the nearby Penedes district. Here producers and growers open their cellar doors to visitors and invite them to witness firsthand the processes involved in their wine-making, and sample the region's famous cava (sparkling wine).

Northwest of Barcelona the visitor can discover Montserrat, a peculiar rocky mountain range featuring ruined hermitage caves. This region draws big crowds and is particularly popular with people who come to worship La Moreneta, the black Madonna, patron virgin of Catalonia. The Museum of Montserrat is noteworthy for its diverse selection of works by artists such as Picasso, Dalí, El Greco and Caravaggio.

To the south, the stunning and distinctive town of Sitges is worth a visit. This town is known for its laidback Bohemian atmosphere, lively festivals and summer carnivals.
