Historical interest: Barcelona

Few cities have a history as long and interesting as Barcelona's. The city's origins go back more than 2,500 years to when the area was first chosen to be a commercial port for the coast. The Phoenicians and Carthaginians first settled here before the area was besieged by the Romans in the 1st century BC. The city was then known as Tarraco and was the region's capital.

Several surviving monuments from this time can be seen in the city's Gothic quarter. The Roman walls still visible in the city were built during the 3rd century to resist French and German invasions.

However, with the collapse of the Roman Empire, the city became occupied by the Visigoths who renamed it Barcinona. Over the centuries the city endured many more invasions and occupations including the renowned Reconquest in which Barcelona's greater area become known as the Spanish Mark: the front line of the constant battle between the Christian kingdoms of the north and the Arabs.

The origins of the Catalan region as we know it today can be traced back to Wilfred the Hairy, infamous Count of Barcelona who established a hereditary system of succession. Barcelona was unified with the Carolingian Empire's other territories in 898 AD but achieved independence within 100 years. From this period, the County of Barcelona became the dominant political and military force of the region and maintained its independence.

Today the Barcelona prides itself on its rich heritage. There are many important historical points of interest that can still be seen around the city. Many visitors are attracted to Barcelona because of its varied architectural structures, medieval monuments and interesting historical museums.
