What to see by car: Benalmadena

Gibraltar is a great place to visit and is only just over an hour's drive from Benalmadena; head south on the A7 and E15 for 115km. There is much to see and do in this old British stronghold, including visiting the caves inside the Rock where numerous fossil remains have been found.

St Michael's cave, with its stalactites and stalagmites, is the most famous. Venture up to the top of the Rock for some stunning views and also meet the tail-less Barbary apes which were introduced by the British in the 18th century. In the town centre the Gibraltar Museum has good historical, architectural and military displays, including a well-preserved Muslim bathhouse and a detailed model of the Rock, made way back in the 1860s.

No serious tour of Andalusia would be complete without a visit to Granada. Visitors flock here to see the Alhambra, that great Moorish pleasure palace still standing. Yet even without this world class wonder, Granada would deserve a visit for its other sights and its gorgeous setting overlooking the Sierra Nevada, which makes it a marvellous excursion base.

Besides the Alhambra and the Genera Life Gardens, see the cathedral; the Capilla Real (Royal Chapel); the Monasterio de la Cartuja; and the two fascinating quarters known as the Albaicin (Moorish) and Sacromonte (gypsy caves where flamenco is performed). Granada is located about 150kms northeast on the A92.

On your return from Granada stop off at Andalusia's second largest city, Malaga. Its good points include the consistently fine climate and attractive setting between sea and mountains. The old fishing quarter (El Palo) specialises in excellent fried seafood, while sweet Malaga wine can be sampled in dozens of traditional bars.

The main sights are the two Moorish citadels crowning the town: the Alcazaba contains a museum of Moorish art, while the Gibralfaro now houses a small parador with sweeping views. Other sights include the Fine Arts Museum containing works by Picasso, a native of Malaga, and a curiously incomplete cathedral.
