Hotels Benidorm
What to see by car: Benidorm
Spain's third-largest city, Valencia, with its confusing road systems and decayed
backstreets may mar first impressions; but shopping, dining and entertainment
supplement some fascinating sightseeing in this historical town. Ceramic domed
roofs glitter in the Mediterranean sunshine, and the tree-lined boulevards of
the modern town contrast with the old-fashioned patios and plazas of the older
quarter.
The neoclassical cathedral guards a goblet of purple agate alleged to be the
Holy Grail. The cathedral's octagonal bell tower is a distinctive landmark and
is known as the Miguelete. Splendid art and ceramic collections, the elegant
Lonja (exchange) and the lively modernist market building are just some of Valencia's
extensive range of attractions. Valencia is about 1 hour, 30 minutes drive north
of Benidorm.
Famed since Roman times for its incandescent skies, Alicante is 30 minutes
drive south west of Benidorm, and is the main city on the Costa Blanca. The
old town has a pleasant and very Spanish atmosphere, and a number of interesting
buildings. Wide, palm-lined promenades sweep along the seafront, where cafés,
bars and shops await investigation. The main sights are the craggy vestiges
of Santa Barbara Castle and the unexpectedly extensive Colleccion de Arte Del
Siglo XX (Museum of 20th century Art).
A little under an hour southwest of Alicante is the Roman city of Murcia set
on a fertile plain by the River Segura. After Moorish occupation, it became
a bishopric and enjoyed great prosperity during the 18th century from agriculture
and silk weaving. Today it is a large commercial and industrial centre and a
lively university city with cafés and tapas bars.
The cathedral (14th century with later additions) has an ornate façade
and rich chapels, and a spiral ramp leads to the belfry and panoramic views.
The Casino (not a gambling den, but a seemly gentleman's club) has an exotically
decorated interior. Polychrome pasos (Holy Week floats) by a local master are
on display at the Salzillo Museum. Film-makers have often taken advantage of
the Arizonan scenery nearby.
