What to see by foot: Costa Brava

Aptly named the 'white coast', the Costa Brava offers remarkable sightseeing with its historic coastal towns and villages, and features some quality beach resorts where you can soak up the Mediterranean atmosphere.

Lloret de Mar is a tourist haven, featuring a beautiful half-moon-shaped sandy beach, as well as small coves with wonderful seascapes which are so characteristic of the Costa Brava. The promenade is ideal for strolling, and brings together a mix of architectures in its 19th century and modernist houses.

Dating from the Imperial era, the Roman sepulchral tower of Santa Cristina stands on a hill above the beach and affords magnificent views of the Mediterranean Sea and coastline.

Farther south of Lloret de Mar is Spain's amazing second city, Barcelona. A paved roadway, known as La Rambla, is the focal point of the city and extends from the harbour to the Plaza de Cataluna. Dominating Barcelona's skyscape are the fantastic openwork spires of la Sagrada Familia (Church of the HolyFamily), a huge, unfinished cathedral created by the Catalan architect Antoni Gaudi. Several other buildings by Gaudi, including the Casa Mila, were designated as UNESCO World Heritage sites in 1984.

Other local landmarks include: the church of San Pablo Del Campo (914 AD); the Gothic cathedral of Santa Eulalia; a monument to Christopher Columbus; and the nearby peak, Tibidabo. Visitors should not miss a tour of the 1992 Olympic stadium and the harbour as well.

Farther south of Barcelona, Catalunia's second port city, Tarragona, has an outstanding collection of Roman statuary. The remains of a Roman amphitheatre and defensive walls are in the city, and a two-tiered Roman aqueduct is nearby. The Romanesque cathedral, construction of which began in the 12th century, is famous for its Gothic façade. Other well-preserved monuments lie just outside the city boundaries.
