What to see by foot: Costa Del Sol

Malaga, Andalusia's second-largest city, is the main port of entry for a myriad of holidaymakers en route to the Costa del Sol. It enjoys an attractive setting between the sea and mountains. The old fishing quarter (El Palo) specialises in excellent fried seafood, while sweet Malaga wine can be sampled in dozens of traditional bars.

The Alcazaba contains a museum of Moorish art and is the town's principal attraction along with the Gibralfaro, which houses a small parador. Not far from these Moorish citadels is the Fine Arts Museum, containing works by Picasso (a native of Malaga) and an incomplete cathedral.

For lively nightlife, head east of Malaga to Torremolinos and Benalmádena. The brash resort of Torremolinos encapsulates the essence of mass tourism. Vestiges of the original fishing village can be discerned in La Carihuela, which has good seafood restaurants. By day, the greyish, gritty but clean beach provides a giant playground for sun-worshippers of all ages, and at night a bazaar of local and African crafts occupies the steps behind.

The neighbouring resort of Benalmádena Costa favours the leisure sailor. Inland, the pretty mountain village of Mijas offers a glimpse of something approaching the real Spain.

To the east of Malaga is the town of Almunecar, with its 19kms of lovely sandy beaches and coves offering an altogether quieter beach area. Water sports are popular here, including snorkelling and scuba diving, with some of the best dives being along the coast. The town sits between two rivers on a hill along with its Moorish castle. The largest of the rivers, the Rio Verde, runs through Almunecar's semitropical valley, where fruit orchards abound.
