What to see by car: Costa Del Sol

There is so much to see away from the beach, especially the miles of unspoilt
and protected countryside peppered with white villages. Located to the northwest
of the Costa is Seville, Spain's fourth-largest city. Seville is always lively,
but especially so during its spring festivals, April fairs and Holy Week parades.
Seville's principal attractions, the huge cathedral and Pedro the Cruel's Moorish
palace, are easily explored on foot.
The Giralda, a former minaret, can be climbed via a winding ramp and offers
spectacular panoramic views. Columbus lies beneath a monumental tomb in the
cathedral. Additionally, the María Luisa Park is a pleasant place to
relax after sightseeing.
At the easternmost point of the Costa del Sol lies the coastal town of Almería
with its distinctive white houses lying scattered over an arid hillside guarded
by an ancient Arab fortress. Almería combines tourism with a thriving
agricultural export business based on its mild winter climate.
The old fishing quarter of La Chanca makes for fascinating exploring; many
of the cube-shaped houses built into the rock are surmounted by caves. The 16th
century cathedral replaced a mosque destroyed in an earthquake, and it has a
Renaissance façade and imposing furnishings of marble and jasper. Excursions
from Almería lead through astonishing countryside featuring: hills, gorges,
dramatic cliffs, and the sand dunes used as the setting for the film Lawrence
of Arabia.
Lying midway between Malaga and Almería, and north of the Sierra Nevada
mountain range is Granada. To cap off a tour of the Costa del Sol and the Andalusian
region, a visit to the great Moorish pleasure palace of La Alhambra is a must.
Built up over centuries, it is really a series of palaces with beautifully landscaped
gardens and flowerbeds. Inside, the furnishings are of the highest quality,
and outside, the view of the Sierra Nevada is breathtaking.
The two fascinating quarters known as the Albaicín (Moorish) and Sacromonte
(gypsy caves where flamenco is performed) should also figure on a Granada visit.
