Historical interest: Costa Del Sol

The rich history of Andalusia and its many ancient civilisations has left behind
a legacy of ruins and historical sites, including: Acinipo in Ronda, Bobastro
near Alora, Alcazaba and the Gibralfaro in the City of Malaga. Visitors can
travel along the Mudejar route in La Axarquia to see the dolmens of Menga and
the figure of Efebro in Antequera.
The Romans left considerable traces, which tourists can admire in the provincial
and municipal museums. But it is the period under Islamic rule which left the
deepest mark. The oriental atmosphere of many of the villages and the orchard
crops from which they earned a living are always evident. The popular music
and the magnificent Muslim buildings occupy a place of prime importance in Andalusian
culture and consequently, in the Costa del Sol.
Christianity in these lands coincides with the Modern Age. Between the 16th
and 18th centuries, the cities and towns were endowed with churches and palaces.
A stroll through the small whitewashed streets in every village on the Costa
del Sol will reveal a long series of modest rural parish churches, but occasionally
it is possible to discern Arab traces in the Baroque forms of the less official
art and architecture.
Apart from the villages with a rural air, today there are housing developments,
yacht harbours, golf courses, centres of entertainment, night clubs and many
other tourist attractions. Fortunately, all of them blend perfectly with the
traditional, peaceful atmosphere enveloping the towns and villages.
