What to see by foot: Estepona

Steeped in history and culture, the town of Estepona remains unspoilt and is truly privileged, offering the visitor an unrivalled array of attractions with more than 30kms of carefully maintained sandy beaches.

Along the length of the municipal district's coast, you can admire a complete ensemble of watch towers of Phoenicio-Roman origin, restored and enlarged under Arabic rule. The towers were of considerable value in consolidating Spanish rule as a defence against incursions from coastal pirates.

Nearby, the Parochial Church of Our Lady of the Redemption was used from 1725 until 1766 as a monastery by the Franciscan fathers of the Tertiary Order. Its façade betrays a curious mixture of stylistically rococo vestiges along with Hispano American colonial architecture.

The Bullring of Estepona has been the scene of many glorious and exciting afternoons. Inaugurated in 1972, the bullring is unique in its asymmetric design, making it the only one of its kind in the world. Designed by the architect Juan Mora Urbano, it is also used as a venue for musical and folkloric shows.

The area boasts wild, bustling beaches contrasted with more tranquil ones featuring waterside restaurants. Chiringuitos Rada beach located in front of the town centre has recently been substantially improved and, having been awarded the European Blue Flag, is unquestionably inviting. Apart from being the longest beach, it also has all the necessary facilities available and is undoubtedly the most popular beach throughout the year.

Other beaches include: the nudist beach of Costa Natura; and La Playa del Cristo beach, which forms a charming cove. The beaches of La Galera and Bahia Dorada are distinguished from the rest by their beautiful rocky areas with cliffs forming enchanting coastal landscapes.
