Hotels Estepona
What to see by car: Estepona
The Costa del Sol and the Andalusian region in general offer some superb sightseeing
if you venture out. Marbella still has the reputation as the ritziest resort
of the Costa del Sol. The rich and famous flock here for its country clubs,
golf courses, luxury hotels and smart boutiques. The super-wealthy colonise
an exclusive satellite resort known as Puerto Banus to the west of town, where
Hollywood-style mansions and cocktail bars cluster.
Sightseeing tends to revolve around people-watching or celebrity-spotting but
the attractions of the old town are obvious enough: pretty white houses, fragrant
orange trees and a Moorish castle. Inevitably, it is an expensive destination.
One hour north of Estepona is the mountain town of Ronda with its breathtaking
views of the surrounding mountains and deep gorge. The best view of the gorge
is from the New Bridge. Old Ronda is a charming place - a classic Andalusian
town which can be enjoyed simply for its Moorish remains and pretty white houses.
Ronda's main attraction, however, is bullfighting. Many come to pay homage
to the second-oldest bullring in Spain and the attached Museum of Bullfighting
which celebrates Ronda's matador hero, Pedro Romero, one of the founding fathers
of tauromachy. The Cueva de la Pilata just outside Ronda contains Bronze Age
fish and bison paintings.
Any holiday to Andalusia would be incomplete without a visit to Gibraltar with
its British military fortifications and museum, the cave of St Michael and the
curious Barbary apes near the top of the famous Rock. Also of interest is the
marina area with its numerous water sport activities on offer. Shopping in Gibraltar
is also very popular with tourists, due to the quality and range of goods on
offer at attractive tax-free prices.
Spain's busiest passenger port, Algeciras, guards the Straits of Gibraltar,
providing impressive views of the neighbouring Rock of Gibraltar. Apart from
a cathedral and a few remnants of fortification, there is little of interest
for sightseers but the setting is indubitably fine, with lovely hills and villages
immediately behind, and a glorious bay at its feet.
