What to see by foot: Fuengirola

Fuengirola is a beach resort first and foremost, and a good one at that; it offers excellent accommodations and entertainment, not to mention miles of beautiful sandy beaches.

The resort's main beaches are the Santa Amalja, Carvajal and Las Gaviotas, and all are broad, clean and sandy. The rather small, shed-like huts, known as Chiringuitos, are simple beachside bars and restaurants ideal for midday refreshments. Above the beaches, the recently renovated promenade running along the water is beautifully landscaped and stretches some 4kms. It is lined with palm trees and is a delight to stroll along.

Water sport activities abound, even including parascending for the more energetic. Between the town and the high village of Mijas, the Parque Aquatico is a popular water park, which has some great attractions for all the family (open April to September).

Fuengirola has an excellent selection of shops, and due to the stiff competition, goods can be had at attractive prices. The compact layout of the resort makes shopping expeditions a breeze. A visit to the flea market every Thursday is a must and is very popular among tourists and locals alike.

For a slice of culture in this predominantly fun-in-the-sun town, visit the ruins of the Castello San Isidro, which is located on a promontory overlooking the sea. This old Moorish castle dominates the area and has a magnificent setting, offering stunning views of the sweeping coastline.
