What to see by car: Fuengirola

There is much to see on a typical driving tour of the region, including majestic mountain towns, ancient historical cities and many superb beach resorts.

Southwest of Fuengirola and past the resort towns of Marbella and Estepona, Gibraltar sits at the toe of the Iberian Peninsula, looking out over the Mediterranean Sea and the African continent. This old British stronghold offers the visitor a host of activities and sightseeing, including dolphin watching and many water sports.

Drive to the top of the Rock and meet the famed Barbary apes, brought here by the British in the 19th century and now unique to this part of the world. The cave system inside the base of the Rock is extensive and includes St Michael's cave where regular concerts are held. Back in the town and along Main Street, a shopper's paradise awaits you, with quality goods on offer at attractive tax-free prices.
For a wonderful drive and some fresh mountain air, head west to Ronda. Its setting, located high above a deep gorge, is magnificent, and the old town is charming with its Moorish remains and pretty white houses.

While you're here, visit the second-oldest bullring in Spain and the attached museum dedicated to Ronda's matador hero, Pedro Romero. On the way out of Ronda, the Cueva de la Pilata, with its excellent Bronze Age fish and bison paintings, is well worth a look.

Sample more mountain scenery by visiting the enchanting town of Granada. The number one draw card here is the great Moorish pleasure palace: the Alhambra. Decked-out with ornate furnishings collected over the centuries, and home to beautiful gardens overlooking the Sierra Nevada mountain range, this perfect place should figure on any visit to the Andalusian region.
