Situated off the coast of Africa and home to sweeping beaches, diverse scenery, and centuries of history, Gran Canaria is the hub of activity in the Canary Islands and a popular destination for all.

Opportunities abound for escaping the inevitable crowds on the coast for exploring the island's magnificent hinterland on foot. Beautiful nature paths lead deep into the mountains, enabling you to see some of the undiscovered parts of Gran Canaria, such as the 'camino reales' - the path system used by the ancient aborigines.

By car, you can visit the many lovely beaches, as well as the dunes of Maspalomas, Caldera Bandama, Pico de las Nieves and the delightful rural hinterland. All along the coastline there are towns and villages to suit all tastes, from the quiet of villages such as Puerto de Mógan, to the glitz and thriving 'day and night' life of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana district.

Gran Canaria is also known as the 'continent in miniature', with its centre being a mountainous, alpine region with peaks as high as 1,951m. The northwest is greener still, while the south is dry and even desert-like with the famous sand dunes of Maspalomas.

The western coast is comprised of a series of mountains and cliffs. The east is more level, and is where most of the tourist resorts have been established all the way to the far north and the capital city of Las Palmas.

Those interested in the island's rich history will appreciate the old district of Triana. Along with Vegueta, Triana is one of the oldest areas in Las Palmas. The main street is lined with interesting historic buildings. In fact, the entire Calle Mayor (main street), from San Telmo Park to the old district of Guiniguada, has been declared an historic monument.

All the main islands in the Canaries have international airports. Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote accept the bulk of the international flights as well as those from mainland Spain. You can fly to the Canaries from most European cities. There is a weekly ferry from the southern Spanish port of Cádiz, as well as regular inter-island ferries.
