Travelling to Gran Canaria - Canary Islands

The Canary Islands are remotely situated off the northwestern coast of Africa and are only realistically reached by air. All the main islands in the Canaries have international airports. Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Lanzarote accept the bulk of the international flights as well as those from mainland Spain.

The Aeropuerto de Gando in Gran Canaria was built in 1993 and, after some improvements, received the category of international airport. It's located on the southwestern coast of the island and has facilities to receive the more than five million visitors that flock to Gran Canaria each year. There are numerous taxis but most package tourists have prearranged shuttles to their respective resorts.

You can fly to the Canaries from most European cities, sometimes stopping over in Spain. Transatlantic visitors usually arrive via a European stopover. There are plenty of package deals and charter flights arriving here. Inter-island flights are numerous as well.

There is a weekly ferry from the southern Spanish port of Cádiz as well as regular inter-island ferries. Boat schedules vary and are published in local newspapers. There are also several trips a day between Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
