What to see by foot: Gran Canaria - Canary Islands

Most tourists only see Playa del Ingles, Puerto Rico and the motorway to the airport, which are in fact the most barren and least attractive parts of the island. There is a wealth of spectacular scenery in the mountains and forests of Gran Canaria. You could go on a different walk every day for a week and each time experience completely different views and see new trees, crops and flowers.

There are many walks of varying lengths and difficulty on Gran Canaria, with a total of 300kms of footpaths. Some of these walks will take you along footpaths that have been in use for centuries and some are little more than goat tracks.

The first roads in Gran Canaria were not constructed until the end of the 18th century. Until then, the most important points on the island were connected via a series of paths. This ancient network is known as 'caminos reales' (royal roads), and has now been recovered and restored to be enjoyed by those who love walking.

The best time to go walking in Gran Canaria is usually from January to May, after the winter rains, when much of the island is really green and there are many wild flowers to see. In general, from mid-September to mid-June the weather is usually good for walking; while mid-summer can be too hot for strenuous walking.

For a more town-based walking experience, the bustling district of Vegueta in the island's capital of Las Palmas is a great area to explore on foot. The Triana main street is lined with remarkable buildings of great interest. Additionally, just wandering the old district of Guiniguada is delightful for those interested in the local history; here the Cathedral de las Palmas is particularly memorable.
