What to see by car: Gran Canaria - Canary Islands

By car, you can visit the many lovely beaches, as well as the dunes of Maspalomas, Caldera Bandama, Pico de las Nieves and the delightful rural hinterland. From desert-like sand dunes and pine forests, to banana plantations and volcanic landscapes, Gran Canaria certainly has a diverse landscape.

Just 20 minutes drive north from Playa del Inglés is Fatga. This very small pueblo lies in the 'Valley of a Thousand Palms' and is considered the prettiest village on the island. It's a great place to take in the peace and quiet of the surroundings and browse the local crafts shops. For the more adventurous among you, it is possible to take a camel ride in the adjacent Barranco de Fataga.

All along the coastline there are towns and villages to suit all tastes, from quiet villages such as Puerto de Mógan, to the glitz and thriving 'day and night' life of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana district.

The historic area of Roque Nublo, with its stony landscape, is astounding. Nearby, the Caldera Bandama is a breathtaking crater, nearly 600m high. Pico de las Nieves (Snows Peak), standing at 1,950m, is also remarkable.

Other attractions to take in are the reptile and crocodile parks, botanical gardens and Mundo Aborigen - a park themed around the island's original inhabitants. For family fun, head to the Aquasur water park or Sioux City theme park.
