What to see by foot: Granada

The city of Granada is one whole monument. Apart from the Arabic edifices and walls, many of the churches still bear the traces of the mosques they once were. The city is full of countless other buildings of historic and artistic interest.

Granada has -the usual quota of churches and museums - typical ofa southern European city. However, Granada also has the Alhambra, considered by some to be one of the wonders of the world. The Alhambra is a massive castle complex constructed over many centuries, consisting of beautiful gardens, fortifications and sumptuous palaces. It was the home of many of the Arabian sultans who ruled the entire province, and received the optimum in interior decoration and architecture. The whole area overlooks the town and affords magnificent views of the nearby Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The Albaicin is the old Arabic quarter located on the hill opposite the Alhambra. It is characterised by cobblestone streets with whitewashed houses. Despite several centuries of neglect and architectural barbarities allowed by the town council, it still retains a strong Arabic feeling. There are many squares with terrazas and places to laze about and have a bite to eat. The Albaicin is an oil painter's paradise; and almost at every turn of the head there is an attractive view, most always involving glimpses of the Alhambra.

Wander the narrow streets and gardens in the town and stop off at one of the many cafés or tavernas; the atmosphere is magic. There are two main zones with a good selection of bars: Pedro Alarcon attracts a generally younger crowd, while the area around Plaza Nueva is more laid back.
