What to see by car: Granada
About 40 minutes east of Granada is the ancient town of Guadix, most famed
for its extraordinary troglodyte caves hollowed from the soft tufa hills beyond
Santiago church. About 10,000 people, including many gypsies, still live in
these strange homes, which are now equipped with electricity, running water
and television.
The town also boasts a Moorish fortress worth visiting. Guadix's pleasant old
centre has an imposing Plaza Mayor (main square) dating from the reign of Philip
II, a baroque cathedral and several mansions. The wind-eroded plateau near the
town offers some startling scenery and is a popular haunt for film crews; head
for La Calahorra or Baza to see some of the best.
The Sierra Nevada (snowy range) located to the southeast of Granada is a popular
tourist destination, as its high peaks make skiing possible in an area along
the Mediterranean Sea.It is predominantly known for its warm temperatures and
abundant sunshine.
This area is also one of Europe's botanical paradises, with over 1,700 registered
species and subspecies along with the greatest number of endemic species in
Spain. There are 78 endemic species of fauna, mostly insects, included in the
Parque Nacional Sierra Nevada.
Located about an hour's drive south of Granada, Almunecar with its handsome
Moorish castle sits on a small hill between the mouths of two rivers: the Rio
Seco and the larger Rio Verde. The latter runs through Almunecar's tropical
valley, a fertile area of subtropical fruit orchards that line the valley floor
and climb the terraced hillsides.
To the west of the town lies Punta de la Mona, a pine-laden headland sheltering
the attractive Marina Del Este sports port. Along the 19kms of coastline, visitors
can choose from a variety of beaches and small coves ranging from shingle to
fine sand. Water sports including scuba diving are popular and you will find
some of the best scenery anywhere along the southern coastline.
