What to see by foot: Ibiza
The town of Ibiza is the historical focal point on the island of Ibiza and
retains its medieval character in spite of massive development elsewhere. Today
the town consists of a lively marina district around the harbour and an old
town with narrow cobblestone streets and flat-roofed, whitewashed houses.
The yacht-clogged marina and the district's main street, Vara de Rey, are full
of constant spectacles: old fishermen, the local Ibizan women swathed in black,
and the ubiquitous scantily-clad tourists. The marina district, with its art
galleries, dance clubs, boutiques, bars and restaurants, is fun to wander about.
Many houses have Gothic styling and open onto spacious courtyards. These houses,
some of which are 500 years old, are often festooned with geraniums and bougainvillea.
The old quarter is entered through the Puerta de las Tablas, flanked by Roman
statues. Placa Desamparadors, crowded with open-air restaurants and market stalls,
lies at the top of the town. Traffic leaves town through the Portal Nou.
Located in a former arsenal in Ibiza's old town, the Museo Arqueologic de Ibiza
y Formentera (Museum of Archaeology) houses the world's most important collection
of Punic remains. It contains pottery and other artefacts from prehistoric sites
in Formentera and Ibiza, and Punic terra cotta figurines and other items from
the sanctuaries of Illa Plana (7th - 5th centuries BC) and Cuieram (4th - 2nd
centuries BC).
Also on display are vases, figurines and other Carthaginian artefacts found
in the island's burial grounds. Examples of Roman epigraphs, sculpture and small
glass bottles are included in the exhibit. Other displays include Moorish artefacts
(10th - 13th centuries AD), various Christian wooden and stone sculptures, plus
ceramics from the 14th - 16th centuries.
Ciudad de Ibiza boasts three outstanding white sandy beaches: Playa Talamanca
in the north, and Ses Figueretes and Playa d'en Bossa in the south - don't be
surprised to find nudity here. The old fishing village of Sa Penya, at the extremity
of the town, is now given over entirely to huge night clubs and fashionable
shops.
