What to see by car: Ibiza

This Mediterranean Balearic island is constantly bathed in sunshine and boasts a stunning coastline, numerous beautiful beaches and a hilly terrain dotted with fig and olive trees.

To the north of Ibiza town, situated on the west coast, is San Antonio, the largest and liveliest tourist resort on the island. Its long wide bay is lined with bars, restaurants and some quality accommodation and is an island Mecca for those looking for a lively nightlife. The resort, featuring a 14th century parish church, is built on an attractive bay which overlooks Isla Conejera, an uninhabited rock island. As one would imagine, the beach here is very crowded in the summer.

To the east of Ibiza town is Santa Eulalia, situated at the foot of the Puig de Missa on the estuary of the only river in the Balearics. The principal monument in town is a fortress church standing on a hilltop, or puig. Dating from the 16th century, it has an ornate Gothic altar screen.

Santa Eulalia del Rio, site of the third major tourist development in Ibiza, has a less crowded beach but is also less impressive. If you stay in this east coast town, you can find a better beach at Cala Llonga in the south or at one of the beaches along the north, including Playa d'es Cana and Cala Llena. These beaches are among the finest on Ibiza.

The salt flats, La Salinas, in the south are one of Ibiza's most famous landmarks. These sparkling salt lakes provide one of the world's most beautiful sunset photograph opportunities. Here beaches include Playa Cavallet, one of the officially designated nudist strands - though nudism doesn't always follow official designations laid down by Ibizan law.
