What to see by foot: Jerez
The town of Jerez de la Frontera, with its wide streets and squares, has a
markedly aristocratic flavour. It is comprised of a city wall enclosing gothic
and baroque churches, and features ancient stately palaces.
The 11th century Moorish fortress, Alcazaba, has been partially restored. Of
special interest is its pretty 18th century church, originally built by the
Arabs as a mosque and now home to a lovely painting by Zurbaran: The Sleeping
Girl.
Also of interest in the town and one of the biggest of its kind in Spain, is
the Archaeological Museum, displaying finds from Paleolithic times up to the
18th century. The Clock Museum is also worth visiting; it contains one of Europe's
most prestigious collections and boasts 302 clocks in perfect working order.
Jerez's most important treasures lie in its more than 100 bodegas (cellars)
where visitors can not only see how sherries are made, bottled and aged but
also get free samples. Among the most famous producers are Sandeman, Pedro Domecq
and Gonzalez Byass - the maker of Tio Pepe.
On a typical visit to a bodega, you'll be shown through several buildings in
which sherry and brandy are manufactured. In one building, you might see grapes
being pressed and sorted; in another, the bottling process; in a third, thousands
of large oak casks.
Afterwards, you may be transported to an attractive bar where various sherries
(amber, dark gold, cream, red, sweet and velvety) can be sampled. Try the very
dry La Ina sherry or the Fundador brandy, one of the most popular in the world.
Take it easy though, these drinks are more potent than you might expect.
Before lunch, you should enjoy a pleasant stroll around the city centre and
try the delicious tapas found in bars and taverns: fruited rice, Russian salads,
olives, seasoned raisins, etc. It is quite logical that the cuisine of Jerez
should be laced with wines of the area.
