Historical interest: La Manga

The Murcia region first rose to prominence with the coming of the Romans. During
this period, mining, agriculture and fishing industries became prominent. The
region went into decline following the fall of the Roman Empire, only to rise
after the Arab victory over Theudemir's Visigoth army in 713 AD. The Arab conquerors
introduced a period of economic prosperity, and the forerunner of today's complex
irrigation system.
The Arab dominance came to an end in 1243 when the Christians captured the
province during the Reconquista. During the following centuries of rule by Castile,
not many shattering historical events happened in Murcia, although a period
of plagues and epidemics seriously disrupted the population and economy in the
17th century. The 18th century saw a recovery from the ravages of the one before,
and important projects such as the construction of the cathedral in Murcia and
the Arsenal in Cartagena were completed.
The 19th century saw mixed fortunes for Murcia, with severe floods and droughts
blighting its first half, but rapid industrialisation powered by mining brought
wealth in the latter part of the century.
However, today the region remains poor due to a number of factors, chiefly
the depletion of its natural resources, the weakness of an economy funded on
foreign investment and the exodus of rural workers to the big cities. Steps
are being taken to reverse this though, including: the establishment of luxury
resorts on the coast and the modernisation of agriculture.a
