What to see by foot: La Palma - Canary Islands
A truly special place, La Palma in the Canary Islands is known as the 'pretty
isle' for its gorgeous vegetation and the brilliant blue of its skies. Its lush
flora and extraordinary scenery make it an outstanding place to explore on foot,
and there are many hundreds of kilometres of walking trails that provide the opportunity
to take in the island's beauty.
A trail known as the 'volcanic route' begins at Refugio El Pilar, in the middle
of the island, and passes seven volcanoes that run along the central ridge.
It is a strenuous hike which takes you to Los Canarios in the south, after about
seven hours of walking.
A trail from the town of Barlovento to La Tosca passes through the largest
dragon tree forest on the island, and also includes scenery of tree-heather
and ferns. At La Tosca, there is a viewing point overlooking the villages of
Gallegos, Franceses and El Tablabo, as well as the steep coastline.
If you continue onwards to Gallegos, you will come across caves which were
once inhabited by the first islanders. You can pay a visit to a goat farm here,
and sample the delicious cheese.
In the northeast of the island lies the nature reserve of Los Tilos, where
a trail meanders through rock walls covered with ferns and lianas. The walk
continues upwards to a lookout point of 250m, and ends by the seaside at Charco
Azul, where you can cool down in the natural swimming pool.
A number of hiking routes traverse the Caldera de Taburiente, a monstrous crater
and nature reserve which is a dominant feature of the island. The Caldera de
Taburiente is a large depression, 5kms across and 2kms deep, with an area of
30 square kilometres. It originated two million years ago, with the formation
of a shield volcano some 20kms in diameter. However, the Caldera was formed
not by the original volcanic activity, but by subsequent erosion.
The highest peaks on the island are around the northern and eastern rim of
the Caldera, including El Roque de los Muchachos (2,426m), Pico de la Cruz (2,351m),
Piedra Llana (2,321m) and Pico de la Nieve (2,239m).
