What to see by car: La Palma - Canary Islands

There is much to see on the island and it's best explored by car. The Caldera de Taburiente, the largest known volcanic crater, is covered by dense pine forests interrupted by streams. It is home to a rich variety of birdlife. The highest point on the island is El Roque de los Muchachos (2,426m), where you can find the Astrophysics Observatory - considered the most important in the northern hemisphere.

The capital of La Palma is Santa Cruz de la Palma, on the eastern coast of the island and on the edge of the Caldera de Taburiente. El Salvador and the Town Hall are two fine examples of 16th century architecture along the town's cobbled streets.

Santa Cruz de la Palma boasts a Museum of Natural History that is well worth visiting for its magnificent zoological displays and documentation of the lives of the original islanders. There is also a life-sized cement replica of the Santa Maria, Christopher Columbus' ship. Near to the town is the Sanctuary of Nuestra Senora de las Nieves, the patron saint of La Palma.

Puerto de Naos has an excellent volcanic beach of fine, black sand. Behind the village are vertical cliffs which reflect a spectacular glow at sunset. South of Puerto Naos is El Remo, lying at the end of a long road flanked by banana plantations. Here you can eat delicious tapas while overlooking the sea.

Fuencaliente is the southernmost village on the island. The pine forests and vineyards enclosing it contrast with imposing volcanoes, including Teneguia which last erupted in 1971.

In Mazo, you can find Belmaco Cave, where prehistoric inscriptions are carved into the walls. There is also an observation deck with an excellent view of the coast.
