Geography of Lanzarote - Canary Islands

The 'Fortunate Islands' is the name given to the Canary Islands - seven inhabited
islands off the northwest coast of Africa. 'Fortunate' because they are blessed
with an almost ideal year round climate due mainly to the warming influence of
the Gulf Stream and favourable trade winds.
Apart from its glorious beach life, Lanzarote boasts many nature-based attractions,
such as La Cueva de los Verdes, which was formed by the lava flow originating
from the eruption of volcano La Corona. At the entrance of La Cueva de los Verdes
occurred a phenomenon known as 'jameo' - the collapse of the surface due to
weight or a gas explosion. Inside the caves, gentle music and a magnificent
lighting system create an unusual ambience, and an auditorium has been installed.
The Visual Music Festival of Lanzarote explains the natural history of the island's
unusual landscape.
Lanzarote offers a multitude of contrasts. Explore the tiny, quiet coves around
the Papagayo Peninsula, where you will find peace and tranquillity around the
calm, turquoise waters; or take in the pulsating lifestyle in the Puerto del
Carmen area, where the entertainment goes on most of the night.
While the beaches are the main attraction here, you should not leave without
making a trip inland to Timanfaya National Park, where you will be surrounded
by volcanic cones, craters and 'fire mountains' shooting geysers up into the
sky. The landscape of the national park will probably be the closest you'll
get to walking on the moon, with its spectacular craters and lunar landscape.
Venture to the north of the island and drive through tiny villages to get to
the volcanic Green Cave.
The rightly famous area of Papagayo is in the southeast corner of Lanzarote.
It is an area of such great natural beauty that no construction is allowed there.
Papagayo consists of half a dozen beautiful golden beaches interspersed with
rocky headlands. The beaches have the reputation of being some of the most beautiful
in the whole of Spain and the Spanish islands.
Lanzarote's many mountains are actually extinct volcanoes, a testament to the
island's turbulent past. There are over 300 of them to explore.
