What to see by car: Lanzarote - Canary Islands

By car, you can explore the Cesar Manrique Foundation, Jardin de Cactus, El Golfo, La Laguna de los Ciclos and the inland villages.

On the south of this small island is the Cesar Manrique Foundation, which is the custodian of the works of Lanzarote's most famous artist. The foundation is situated in what was Cesar Manrique's house, now known as El Taro de Tahiche.

Timanfaya National Park is a must-see for any visitor to Lanzarote. It boasts 50kms of amazing volcanic landscape, lunar-like craters and rare plant species. A novelty meal can be had at El Diablo Restaurant, where traditional Canarian food is cooked in a natural volcanic oven.

On arrival at the visitor's car park, you will more than likely witness several demonstrations of how hot the ground can be in this area; temperatures just a few metres below the surface reach between 400C and 600C. Dry brush thrown into a hole in the ground catches fire immediately; water poured into a bore hole will seconds later erupt back into the air as steam.

On the southern coast, El Golfo is one of the few rare examples of hydro-volcanism, volcanic activity that occurs near the coast. La Laguna de los Ciclos is a crater lake of the most intense green colour. Los Hervideros is the name by which the coast is known at the point where the waves violently strike the pathways formed by the lava flows.

The centre of the island is the protected zone of La Geria, which includes the quaint villages of Yaiza, Tias, San Bartolome and Teguise. The unusual landscape here is a protected area and shows visitors a good example of how rural life is lived on these islands.
