What to see by foot: Lloret De Mar

Lloret de Mar is great for strolling; the beaches, coves and interesting historic centre are all within easy reach of one another. The variety of accommodation in Lloret is an attraction in itself, as are the large number of leisure opportunities. Enjoy a walk around the historic centre, with its vintage flowerpot-adorned, whitewashed buildings and the narrow streets of the old town.

The Sant Roma Parish Church (1522 AD), featuring a high altarpiece painted by Seraphin with the aid of Jaume Fontanet as well as a Gothic portico and belfry with Romanesque evocations, is a must-see. Most notable among the non-religious buildings are the Pujol-Farnes House and the Liceu. Situated on the promontory separating the city from the beach, Platja de Fenals is the remains of Saint John's castle.

Lloret de Mar also boasts a beautiful half-moon-shaped sandy beach, as well as small coves featuring the wonderful seascapes which are so characteristic of the Costa Brava. The area is great for scuba diving due to the excellent quality of the water. The Promenade brings together 19th century and modern houses. Look out for the Casa de la Vila (Town Hall), an edifice dating from the middle of the 19th century, and Garriga House.

Santa Cristina, a Roman sepulchral tower dating from the imperial era, stands on a hill above the beach and shows the character of buildings in transition between Baroque and neoclassical architecture.

An ancient Iberian settlement dating back to around 250 BC has been fully excavated at the hilltop site of Puig de Castellet. A model of the site and archaeological finds can be viewed at the town's Verdaguer Cultural Centre.

Take a walk around the marina: it's delightfully crammed with luxury yachts and extravagant terraces. Bars and restaurants help you enjoy the Catalan night, making it possible to taste all the region's products.
