Hotels Lloret De Mar
What to see by car: Lloret De Mar
Lloret is within an hour of the French border and the Pyrenees mountain range.
There is much to see to the south of the area, including Spain's second-largest
city, Barcelona. Gerona is also nearby and is a delightful place to take in
some history and relax by the riverside.
Barcelona, sandwiched between sparkling sea and green hills, is about an hour's
drive south. Many buildings date back beyond the 15th century, including the
cathedral, and essential sightseeing includes the Gothic Quarter, one of Europe's
architectural gems. Nearby, the famous tree-lined avenue known as Las Ramblas
leads down to the sea, and throughout the day (more dubiously at night) a fascinating
tide of humanity flows past flower stalls and newsstands.
Barcelona has many excellent museums including superb art collections. In architecture
too, this enchanting city excels, with imaginative examples of Spanish modernism
by the local genius Antoni Gaudi. Don't miss the Casa Batllo on Passeig de Gracia,
his unfinished masterpiece La Sagrada Familia (Church of the Holy Family) or
the whimsical Parc Guell.
Perpignan, 130kms north and into France, is in the Catalan capital of Roussillon
and features palm trees and colourful façades. During the Middle Ages,
Perpignan was ruled by the kings of Majorca and Aragon, and their legacy can
be seen in the Palais des Rois de Majorque, a huge, fortified palace with red
brick ramparts, elegant arcaded courtyards, royal chapels and a Gothic great
hall.
In the centre of town is the Place de la Loge, dominated by the Loge de Mer,
a fine Gothic building with carved wooden ceilings. The twisting streets of
the old quarter surround the Cathedrale de St Jean, built in typical Roussillon
style with red brick and pebbles. An adjoining chapel houses a wooden statue,
Devout Christ, which is carried through the streets in La Procession de la Sanch
on Good Friday.
On the same road as Perpignan (A7) is the historic city of Gerona, lying on
the River Ter. The thin wedge of land in the old city contains all the sights
and monuments that are easily explored on foot.
Gerona boasts a fine 13th - 14th century Gothic cathedral and the impressive
church of San Feliu (11th - 18th centuries), as well as an archaeological museum.
For some excellent outdoor cafés and a bite to eat in a very pleasant,
relaxing part of town, head for the riverside Rambla Llibertat and the Placa
del Vi.
