The name Madrid conjures up images of bullfights, glamorous footballers, dusky architecture and the glory of imperial Spain. All these images are alive and well in the modern fun-loving metropolis.

Visit the Prado and park to glimpse both culture and Madrilenos at play. The Prado hosts a bewildering number of classical and modern artistic masterpieces. Among the many priceless highlights is one of the world's largest collections of works by the Dutch masters, Rembrandt and Reubens. The nearby park gives a respite from museums and galleries and has many scenic walks, a boating lake and a famous statue of the Devil at its northern end.

Nearby Toledo is a magnet for tourists. The capital city before Madrid, it boasts narrow atmospheric streets, an imposing cathedral and impregnable walls set atop a hill. The city is a great place to savour the sights and smells of old Castile, although it can get crowded in the summer.

Madrid's geographical limits are set by a natural triangle: on the western side is the Central System (the Sierra de Guadarrama mountains); the south represents the Royal Site of Aranjuez; and finally, the eastern edge of the triangle comes from the rupture of the fluvial river basins.

Madrid's origins are old, but the city only really came into prominence during the reign of Philip II, when he made it his capital in 1561. It was at first seen as a strange choice due to its central position away from the coast and major rivers. The Habsburgs embarked on a ferocious building policy, bequeathing the city many sumptuous buildings. After that, the city's fortunes declined along with Spain's, culminating in dictatorship under Franco. The first municipal elections were held in 1979, and Madrid has slowly been regaining its civic pride, although it has never lost its fun-loving reputation.

The best approach to Madrid by car is via the E-70 west of Bilbao; then south on the E-804 to the junction with the E-05, which heads southwest to Burgos. Madrid is connected to Europe and regularly to the cities in Spain by rail. Service 180 is an express bus from London's Victoria Station to Madrid, departing London daily at 21:00, arriving in Madrid the following day at 21:30. Barajas International Airport is located to the northeast of the town centre.
