Hotels Magaluf - Majorca
What to see by car: Magaluf - Majorca
Apart from the Costa de Calvia where Magaluf is located, Majorca has many other
beach resorts and secluded coves dotted around the island, which are all accessible
by car. There are also historical and architectural treasures in some of the
island's villages and cities.
Inca, the island's market and agricultural centre and second-largest city,
is 47kms north of Magaluf on the PM27 motorway. Thursday is market day for farming
equipment and livestock; and there are also a variety of low-priced leather
goods sold here at attractive prices including: shoes, purses, jackets and coats.
Modernization has deprived Inca of its original charm, but the parish church
of Santa Maria la Mayor and the convent of San Jeronimo hold some interest,
as does the original Son Fuster Inn - a reminder of an earlier, simpler era.
North of Magaluf and west of Inca is the town of Deya. Before you reach the
town, consider a stopover at San Marroig at the KM-26 mark on the highway. Now
a museum, this was once the estate of Archduke Lluis Salvador. Born in 1847,
the archduke fled court life and found refuge here with his young bride in 1870.
A tower on the estate was built in the 1500s. Many of the archduke's personal
furnishings and mementos, such as photographs and his ceramic collection, are
still here. The estate is surrounded by lovely gardens and there are many panoramic
views on the property.
Set against a backdrop of olive green mountains, Deya is peaceful and serene,
with its stone houses and creeping bougainvillea. It has long had a special
meaning for artists. Robert Graves, the English poet and novelist (I, Claudius
and Claudius the God), lived in Deya, and died here in 1985. He is buried in
the local cemetery.
In the northeast of the island is the stunning beach resort of Alcudia, which
attracts visitors with its beautiful long beach and charming old town. Parts
of the town date back to the 14th century. Roman and archaeological remains
collected through excavations are on display at the archaeological museum.
The view from Sa Talaia d'Alcudia hill is spectacular and well worth the 400m
climb to the summit. Nearby are the natural wetlands of l'Albufera, a nature
sanctuary with many rare birds, fish, amphibians and plants.
