Geography of Majorca
    
Majorca, along with its sister islands of Menorca and Ibiza, make up the Balearic
Islands. Majorca is the largest and lies in the Mediterranean Sea off the southeast
coast of mainland Spain. The south of the island is the location of the island's
capital, Palma de Majorca, and is home to the majority of tourist infrastructure
and facilities, while the north of the island is less developed. Due to its
varied terrain and mild winter climate, Majorca is particularly popular with
cyclists seeking the challenges the landscape offers.
Despite its relatively small size, Majorca encompasses a wide variety of Mediterranean
scenery. To the north, the Tramuntana range rises steeply out of the sea and
is characterized by dramatic sheer cliffs. The southern end of the range is
less dramatic though, as the landscape is typified by farming and orderly terraces.
The interior of the island consists primarily of fertile plains known as Es
Pla. Although agriculture is no longer a primary industry on the island, much
of the lower fertile country plains, in particular the Sa Pobla-Muro plain,
are characterized by fields of almond trees, olives trees and vineyards. Driving
through this area of Majorca is particularly pleasant as the fields afford scenic
views.
As for beaches, the northeast is dotted with many small bays such as those
in Pollensa and Alcudia, which are particularly popular. The southern beaches,
however, draw the main crowds - locals and visitors alike - as the coast is
drier, rockier and covered with long white fine-sand beaches. Aside from the
resorts around Palma, Santa Ponsa beach is also a popular spot and allows for
good swimming and a variety of water sports.
