What to see by foot: Majorca

Palma de Majorca is the island's main city and home to at least half the island's population. Although the town is mostly renowned for its lively nightlife, exploring it during the day can be equally rewarding.

The town's old quarter is an eccentric mix: the area in among the quaint cobbled streets is home to some the island's most fashionable designer boutiques and contrasting old Gothic churches. Dominating the skyline is the renowned Gothic cathedral, a massive structure which took over 300 years to build. The side-streets surrounding the cathedral are equally as enjoyable, providing a glimpse of the 'real' Spain. Also worth visiting in the old quarter are the Banyas Arabas (Arab baths), and Moslem and Bellvar castles.

The Museu de Majorca is one of the island's most popular attractions. Located in a converted 15th century palace, this museum has an interesting array of exhibits and contains some notable archaeological finds.

For families, there are plenty of attractions to keep the kids busy during the day. Nearby Golf Fantasia is without doubt one of the best miniature golf courses in Majorca and is set amid waterfalls, caves and tropical gardens. Similarly popular is Marine Land, a water amusement park with performing dolphins, sea lions and parrot shows throughout the day.

For diners and shoppers, Palma has plenty to offer. There is a wide variety of tapas bars, bodegas, discos and excellent restaurants offering fresh seafood and traditional Majorcan and Mediterranean specialties. Palma is also home to a range of international restaurants and British style pubs.
