What to see by car: Majorca

Many exciting daytrips can be easily made from Palma to explore the rest of
the island. Of particular note is La Reserva Puid de Galatzó, a nature
reserve situated in Majorca's southwest. Nestled at the foot of the Galatzó
Mountain, this is one of the most enigmatic zones of the island. This is principally
due to the legend of the Earl of Mal and his ghost who still inhabits the hills,
as well as the abundance of scenic waterfalls and indigenous plants and wildlife.
Heading farther into the mountains, take the time to visit Soler (not to be
confused with the beach resort of the same name). This small mountain village
oozes charm and is packed with attractive old buildings, lush gardens and open
plazas bordered by numerous small bars and restaurants. Soler can be reached
by road; however, many visitors choose to take the train ride from Palma through
the scenic olive groves and the stunning Tramuntana mountains.
For the adventurous, Cap de Formentor is the island's northernmost rocky promontory
and an out-of-the-way paradise great for walking, lizard-spotting and bird-watching.
Alternatively, there are many historic towns and churches to visit. Alcudia
is an historic town with Roman city remains, an excavated amphitheatre and an
exemplary museum. Also popular is Valldemossa, a former monastery set amid lovely
gardens. The monastery's palatial rooms include remnants from Chopin. The quaint
old town of Valldemossa is also worth a look, and the Costa Nord show offers
a fascinating perspective on the island's history. The town's rocky cove just
out of the village affords safe swimming.
In the south there are many resort beaches to choose from, although trying
to find an unspoilt and quiet beach on Majorca's popular south-eastern coast
can be challenging. The sheltered bay of Calla Mondrag is scenic, surrounded
by pine trees and rocky outcrops; while the northern tip beaches around Soller
are less developed.
