Historical interest: Majorca

Despite being relatively unknown to the masses until the onset of major tourism
in the 1960s, Majorca has a long and interesting history that can be traced
back to 3000 BC. Remaining Roman fortifications and burial chambers from this
period are well preserved and can be visited today.
Prior to being a Roman colony, Majorca was ruled by the Carthaginians until
approximately 123 BC. Due its strategic location, Majorca endured many more
invasions and occupations over the centuries, including a brief period of stability
while occupied by the Moors.
Christianity was introduced with the arrival of the Crusaders. Majorca was
fast declared a Christian Kingdom by Jaime I around 1230, and his reign continued
with Jaime II and Jaime III. Many churches and buildings from this period are
still scattered around the island.
Over time, Majorca developed into a great trading port and was duly attacked
and captured by the infamous Pedro of Aragon. The fortifications that are scattered
at strategic locations on the island were built during this period to protect
against pirates and other invaders.
Aragon's reign remained secure for an extensive period and it wasn't until
the 15th century that Majorca was officially unified with Spain as a result
of a marriage between Ferdinand Aragon and Isabella Castille. Since then, Majorca
has remained under Spanish rule and government.
Today Majorca prides itself on its rich heritage and the many historical points
of interest that can still be seen around the island.
