Geography of Malaga

Located in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, the city of Malaga is at the
heart of a beautiful and diverse region. The territory of Malaga can be divided
into two distinct landscapes, with the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea to
the south and a succession of valleys and mountains to the north.
Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Malaga's southern coast is lined by miles
and miles of golden sands. This region is extremely popular with visitors and
is aptly named the Costa del Sol, or Coast of the Sun. Because of its geographical
position, the Malaga coast is sheltered from the cool northern winds and enjoys
some of the warmest weather in Spain and the longest sunshine hours.
To the east, the coastline can be fairly rugged and rocky; while the western
area offers the large gold sand beaches which make the Costa del Sol such a
popular tourist choice. From Malaga, visitors also have easy access to: the
Balearic Islands (Majorca, Minorca and Ibiza) in the Mediterranean Sea; the
Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean close to the Moroccan coast; and Ceuta
and Melilla, which are located in northern Africa but still Spanish territories.
Malaga is also bordered by broad fertile plains to the west, enclosed by the
Malaga mountain range. Although the mountains are not very high, the steep façades
of the Malaga range offer an attractive natural landscape and provide for a
multitude of recreational activities. The southern part of the Penibética
mountain range in the north forms a natural frontier with France.
