What to see by foot: Malaga

Malaga has many interesting attractions crammed into a small area, and much of these sights can be explored on foot. Spain's most celebrated painter, Pablo Picasso, was born in Malaga and his birthplace was recently declared a historic-artistic monument.

The elegant yellow building located at Plaza de la Merced is now the headquarters of the Picasso Foundation. The museum exhibits many of the artist's drawings and works along with material about his life. The centre also fosters varied cultural activities including the promotion of contemporary art with a special emphasis on Picasso himself.

Similarly popular is the town's dramatic cathedral. Affectionately referred to as La Manquita ('one-armed woman' - due to the completion of only one tower) the cathedral was built on the site of a former mosque which was destroyed when the Moors were conquered.

The interior is influenced by both Renaissance and Baroque styles and contains many interesting religious paintings, sculptures and manuscripts. Adjoining the cathedral is the pretty 15th century Iglesia del Sagrano. Malaga has many distinctive churches, and others also worth visiting include: Iglesia de los Martires and Iglesia de Santiago.

Malaga boasts many interesting museums. Next door to the cathedral, the Dioxesal Museum is dedicated exclusively to religious art, while the small and attractive Art and Popular Customs Museum gives the visitor a glimpse of the past traditions of the Andulcian people.

One of the city's most important historical sites is the well -preserved 11th century fortress, La Alcazaba, now home to the Archaeology Museum. The main wing has many interesting exhibitions and offers scenic views over the town and sea. Another must-see is the Roman Theatre located on La Alcazaba's lower slopes.
