Historical interest: Malaga

Malaga has a rich history, and the events of its illustrious past have left many
imprints on the town which can still be seen today. Malaga's historic centre is
home to a fortress which dates back to 1065, and is now a fascinating archaeological
museum.
Over 3,000 years ago, the Phoenicians landed in what was then known as Málagathey,
and built La Alcazaba. Today, the archaeological museum housed in the Moorish
castle beneath the fortress displays many pieces of Phoenician pottery excavated
from the fortress and nearby burial grounds. Malaga later developed into an
industrious harbour and became an important centre for salting fish.
During the 6th century, the Greeks conquered the peninsula and were shortly
followed by the Romans who colonized Spain in 218 BC and remained for over six
centuries. The Romans enlarged La Alcazaba Fortress and built a theatre at its
base, which can be visited today.
The Moors invaded Spain in 711 BC, and Malaga became a primary Moorish city
and port, particularly famed for its production of quality figs and wine. Malaga
grew to become one of the foremost merchant centres on the Al-Andalus Peninsula
and was occupied by the Moors until the mid-15th century, at which time it fell
to the Christian Crusaders.
Today Malaga prides itself on its rich heritage. Many important historical
remnants can still be seen in the city, and many visitors are attracted to Malaga
because of its varied historic churches, medieval monuments and interesting
museums.
