Geography of Marbella

Located on Spain's southeastern Iberian peninsula, the city of Marbella is at the heart of a beautiful and diverse region. The territory of Marbella can be divided into two distinct landscapes, with the warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea and Andulsian coastal beaches to the city's east, and a succession of valleys and mountains inland to the west.

Bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Marbella's coastal region is lined by miles and miles of golden sands. This region is extremely popular with visitors and is aptly named the Costa del Sol, or Coast of the Sun.

Because of its geographical position, the coast is sheltered from the cool northern winds and enjoys some of the warmest weather in Spain as well as the most hours of sunshine. To the far northeast, the coastline becomes fairly rugged and rocky; while the southwestern area offers the long gold sand beaches, which make the Costa del Sol such a popular tourist choice.

The surrounding inland region is just as stunning as the coast, and offers visitors miles of unspoilt countryside. Marbella is surrounded by the La Concha mountain range, a region rich in native flora and fauna.

The La Concha is covered in pine trees, walnut and olive trees, and wild orchids; it is home to some of Spain's native wild animals, such as the Hispanic wild goat, eagle and Royal owl. El Mirador is the range's highest point and offers spectacular panoramic views of Marbella and its surrounding area.

To the northwest, the landscape turns into fertile flat plains. Here visitors can see the many traditional white villages that pepper the countryside.
